<image:title>Our Team - Who we are</image:title>
<image:caption>Doulas best support families if we, too, are in a community of support. People are healthier before and after childbirth when they're wholly supported and empowered to make informed decisions. That's why our collaborative goal is to ensure clients have a cooperative network of support. Birmingham Born is a collective of birth and postpartum doulas, childbirth educators, and lactation specialists. Each of our members is dedicated to ensuring families have positive birth experiences. By supporting one another, we better support you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Team - Allison Miller</image:title>
<image:caption>Allison Miller is a birth and postpartum doula, a childbirth educator, a midwife’s assistant, and a student midwife in Birmingham, Alabama. After completing her Master’s in Public Health with a focus in Maternal and Child Health and International Health, she saw a disconnect between policy and the ability to actually help individual families. Allison, fueled by a passion for empowering people with information and choice, began her path as a doula after realizing that universally there was a lack of dignity and respect for birthing individuals in the labor room. She trained through DONA in 2009 and certified through Doula Trainings International (DTI) as a birth and postpartum doula in 2016. In 2017, she certified as a Childbirth Educator through DTI. In 2019 she became a birth assistant for local midwife. __________________________________________________ I believe that to the overlooked, a doula is a witness. To the powerless, a doula is strength. To the voiceless, a doula is a shout. To the disenfranchised, a doula is hope. I am a shoulder, a hand, a cool glass of water, a warm rag, a sounding board in a quiet place. A keeper of time and space. Someone that helps navigate systems, processes and emotions. Someone that translates and educates. At some births I am all of these things. And at some births I am simply there to observe. Allison is a birth and postpartum doula and a childbirth educator.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Team - Emily Gray</image:title>
<image:caption>Emily Gray has been providing postpartum support to the Birmingham area for three years. After training through DONA International in 2016 she has assisted many families as they welcome new member(s) to their family. Providing vital support whether it be after pregnancy to childbirth or after the adoption process. Emily has a career in medical transcription but is called to postpartum doula work and understands the vital importance of support in this sacred time for everyone involved. In addition, she has two children of her own, son Kal and daughter Lilliana. __________________________________________________ Often times the amount of support available following childbirth can be lacking. New parents can feel isolated, left at home, overwhelmed. I aim to provide companionship, non-judgmental support, and education. I provide a variety of services based on each families unique needs. As the entire family experiences this new season, I aim to support mom through her physical recovery while also emotionally supporting the entire family. I would be honored to assist you with your 4th trimester. Emily is a postpartum doula and placenta encapsulator.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Team - Emily Peterson</image:title>
<image:caption>Emily loves helping people transition into parenthood — both as a birth and postpartum doula. She has been serving families in the Birmingham area for almost 10 years. Her journey into birth work began after her experience becoming a new mother. She also loves spending time with her two sons, leading Tinkergarten classes, fostering animals, and teaching yoga. __________________________________________________ I believe parents deserve to be empowered with evidence-based information and the ability to confidently make decisions about the birth experience and care of their child. As a doula, I am there to support parents physically and emotionally as they begin a new journey together. It is an honor to be present at a time they will remember for the rest of their lives. <image:title>Our Team - Emily Thayer</image:title>
<image:caption>Emily is a birth doula, photographer, and midwife’s assistant in Birmingham. Her interest in birth began in middle school, but during college she began exploring other options and found herself torn between pursuing a career in either midwifery or counseling. To see if birth was still a passion of hers, she attended a doula training and began working with a local nonprofit. While witnessing the impact that empowered births can have and the lack of true patient centered care that her clients were receiving, she realized the importance of doula work and felt a sense of true belonging and peace in this role. In addition to her certification as a birth doula in 2021 (DONA), she completed a postpartum doula training in 2023 (CBI) and began her work as a birth photographer and birth assistant shortly after. Emily is also still working with the local nonprofit as contract doula and community outreach coordinator. __________________________________________________ In our world we have often deduced birth to being something you must get through. But when given space, compassion, and support, I believe the birth experience can transform the way a woman views herself and the strength that she carries into motherhood. Birth carries different fears, excitements, doubts, and emotions for each person and can’t be met with a one size fits all approach. My role is to merely walk with mothers as they process their desires, find their voice, and help support and encourage that voice. Emily is a birth and postpartum doula and is a birth photographer.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Team - Kristin Rand</image:title>
<image:caption>Kristin Rand believes in the power of magic and the sacred rhythm of life’s expansions and contractions. She holds a deep passion for helping others feel seen and cherished as they navigate the thresholds of becoming and dissolving. Her call to doula work arose from awe and reverence for the incredible power within birthing bodies. After having two children of her own, Kristin answered this calling by training as a full-spectrum doula through DTI. With an integrated approach, she joyfully and lovingly holds space, honored to witness one of the most transformative chapters of a person’s life. In addition to her work as a birth doula, Kristin is a ceremonialist, yoga teacher, and magic activator. __________________________________________________ I want to ensure that you feel both safe and fiercely strong as you navigate the waves of this life-changing journey. In our time together, we will cultivate a space of radical love and care, where your needs are valued as sacred and your experience is honored in all its dimensions. <image:title>Our Team - Hannah Rigg</image:title>
<image:caption>Hannah is a certified birth doula, Licensed Masters Social Worker, and baby carrying instructor. Hannah found the work of a doula to be the most natural embodiment of her social work training. After years of working at the community level supporting pregnant parents and new parents, Hannah is grateful for the opportunity to experience this transformational time individually with each client. Her knowledge of development and attachment fuels her passion for a truly easeful and compassionate birth that informs the delicate dance between caregiver(s) and baby as they navigate their new lives together. __________________________________________________ I'm continuously intrigued and amazed by the ways in which birth unfolds and parents intuitively care for their babies. I believe every parent is the right parent for their baby and that we often just need a bit of encouragement to confidently trust what innately feels best to us as parents. This begins with your journey to conception, throughout pregnancy, and our years parenting our children. The invitation into your family's journey to parenting is a gift. <image:title>Our Team - Rachel Sims</image:title>
<image:caption>Rachel Sims is a certified birth and postpartum doula through Doula Training International, with a deep passion for supporting families during one of the most transformative times in their lives. Her interest in birth work began unexpectedly during a Human Development class at the University of Alabama, where she was introduced to the miracle of birth by having to watch a video of a live birth in class. Inspired by this experience, she earned her degree in Human Development and Family Studies, focusing on Family Studies, in 2013. Becoming a mother herself in 2016 gave Rachel firsthand insight into the importance of advocacy and informed care during labor and delivery. She quickly realized that many families lack the resources or education to fully understand their options. This realization, coupled with her personal experiences, motivated her to pursue birth and postpartum doula training after the birth of her second child. __________________________________________________ I believe in the power of compassionate support and education, and I feel deeply called to help families feel empowered and informed throughout their birthing and postpartum journey. I believe birth and motherhood are miraculous and beautiful processes, with the power to transform lives. Every family deserves to have their voices heard and their choices respected. I’m passionate about building trust and connection, walking alongside families as they navigate the challenges and joys of birth. My goal is to not only support families during labor but to continue caring for them during the postpartum period, helping them adjust and find confidence as they step into life with their new baby. <image:caption>Rachel B. is a birth and postpartum doula serving families throughout the Birmingham area. A mother of four and former long-term UK resident, she brings a calm, reassuring presence shaped by years of experience supporting families across cultures. Since becoming a doula in 2020, Rachel has combined her background in public health with a steady, compassionate approach that helps parents feel informed, confident, and cared for as they navigate pregnancy, birth, and the early weeks of parenting. __________________________________________________ I believe every mother deserves a birth and postpartum experience where she feels safe, heard, and supported — and that her partner and family feel supported as well. That care begins during pregnancy, where we’ll explore your preferences, needs, and options together. Throughout, I offer steady, compassionate support that helps you feel calm and confident, even when things don’t go as planned. Whether I’m supporting you in labor or helping your family rest and recover in those first days at home, my goal is always to nurture an emotionally safe space where you can find your footing, trust yourself, and feel truly cared for as you welcome your baby. <image:caption>Toni is a birth doula trained through DONA International and a mom of two. After her experiences throughout her pregnancies and very different births, both of which included the support of an amazing doula, she felt a call to take this path. As a former classroom teacher, her love of teaching, along with her passion for all things birth, has found the perfect blend as she now finds great joy in providing women with support and information so they can feel confident making informed choices that leave them feeling empowered and supported. __________________________________________________ I know that pregnancy and birth can bring about many emotions, but I firmly believe it can be a time of immense joy and transformation. I am passionate in my belief that birth is truly more than a singular event. The ripples of your birth will follow you into your motherhood and permeate every aspect of your life going forward. That pivotal moment is truly a well on which you can reflect and draw strength from for years to come. I would be honored to walk alongside you during this precious time, offering you unwavering support and preparation for the miracle of birth. Toni is a birth doula.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lydia is a birth doula, massage therapist, and health coach. She integrates these modalities to holistically support individuals through their pregnancy and birth journey. Lydia is deeply passionate about nurturing others and walking beside them as they navigate their own unique path to parenthood. Her approach is intuitive, empowering, and rooted in the belief that every birthing person deserves to feel loved, held, and supported. __________________________________________________ As the eldest daughter in a single-mother household, nurturing came naturally to me. I was always fascinated by birth and motherhood. I also witnessed, from a child’s perspective, the chaos and overwhelm that can come with it. That experience fuels my work today. I want mothers to feel truly seen and empowered to love themselves. When a mother thrives, so does her baby. This work is deeply personal to me. I don’t see clients as just clients - they’re people. People with stories, needs, and unique journeys. I’m here to nurture, guide, and uplift parents through one of life’s most powerful transitions. It would be an honor to be invited into your story. <image:caption>Tricia Phillips is a birth doula trained through DONA International. She has had a heart for moms and babies for as long as she can remember. Tricia is a nurturer and cares deeply for others, and is health-minded. Becoming a doula was the perfect blend of her passions and skills. She believes it is important for women to have access to reliable information in order to make informed choices for their births and feel empowered, as well as to be supported and cared for with all of the vulnerabilities and unknowns that pregnancy and birth can bring. She is wholeheartedly invested in meeting the individual needs of each woman she has the honor to walk alongside on their birth journey, knowing that no two experiences are the same. Tricia is also a mathematics professor at UAB investing in students' lives each day and making strides in public health research, as well as math education. She loves to play ultimate frisbee, spend time with friends, and try new restaurants in her free time. __________________________________________________ The sacredness, beauty, and transformative nature of birth leaves me in awe each time. It is an honor to share in the time and space of a new life coming into this world, with so much vulnerability and strength exhibited by the woman giving birth. I envision a world where the one giving birth is fully seen, listened to, and honored by all those bearing witness to the hard work she does in growing and delivering her baby. One where this witnessing of the most incredible process a woman's body is capable of is used as a reminder to women of the depths of their strength. A world where women feel empowered in their journey and families walk confidently in the direction of caring for new life with the support they desire. I want to be a part of making that world a reality. I will inform when you desire choice. I will listen without judgement when the words need to flow out. I will comfort when the pain is too much to bear. You and your baby are worth a safe, loving environment. And I will be with you every step of the way to ensure that. <image:title>Our Team - Hannah Haas Burkhalter</image:title>
<image:caption>Hannah Haas is a mother, dietitian, and lactation consultant. She completed her undergrad and Masters in Human Nutrition at Alabama in 2016 and began a job as a nutritionist at the health department for the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). She quickly realized the gap in women’s healthcare in terms of nutrition and breastfeeding education. Societal expectations for infant feeding and the actual experience of mothers did not add up. This started her on the path to become a lactation consultant and she obtained her lactation credential (IBCLC) in 2020. In addition to offering in-home lactation support, Hannah Haas has served breastfeeding parents by working as a lactation consultant in a pediatric hospital setting since 2019. __________________________________________________ Women (and their babies!) deserve routine nutrition and breastfeeding support. How can one pour from an empty cup? There is nothing more humbling, joyful, and sometimes unpredictable than those early moments of motherhood. I feel privileged to work with mothers during such a transformative time and aim to avoid an all-or-nothing approach to infant feeding. It is my goal to provide gentle, evidenced-based lactation support that empowers mothers to care for themselves and meet their breastfeeding goals. Hannah is a lactation consultant.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Team - Sharita Crear</image:title>
<image:caption>Sharita Crear is a certified full-spectrum doula committed to providing compassionate, holistic care throughout every stage of the reproductive journey. With a specialized focus on postpartum bereavement, she works closely with families to offer emotional, physical, and informational support during one of life’s most profound and challenging moments. Understanding that postpartum grief is deeply personal, Sharita creates a safe, non-judgmental space for families to express their feelings, process their emotions, and begin healing at their own pace. She offers a comforting presence, listening with empathy and helping families navigate the often isolating emotions they experience. Sharita’s approach is rooted in a deep understanding of the unique nature of grief, offering families the support they need to find comfort and healing during a difficult time. __________________________________________________ "Grief doesn’t end, but it changes. It is a passage, not a place to stay. It is not a sign of weakness, nor lack of faith. It is the price of love." I believe that grief is a natural and necessary part of the healing process. It’s a reflection of the love that was shared, even if that love was brief. My work is personal because I understand how devastating the loss of a pregnancy or newborn can be, and how vital it is for families to have a compassionate and supportive space to grieve, heal, and remember. I’m honored to help families navigate this journey, offering empathy and a safe place to honor their unique experience of loss. Sharita is a birth, postpartum, and bereavement doula.</image:caption>

<image:title>Placenta Encapsulation - Placenta Encapsulation</image:title>
<image:caption>The placenta is an amazing organ that grows for the sole purpose of facilitating the growth of another life. At the culmination of gestation, the birth of the placenta is the finale; it follows the baby and participates in the birth process. Preparing the placenta for placentaphagy is in accordance with our most primal drives as mammals, and though scientifically there are no double-blind studies to-date that confirm placentaphagy carries the benefits ascribed in the trending of placenta preparation, wisdom from the ages, plus intuition, keeps us recommending encapsulation. Disclaimer: Some popular claims indicate that placenta encapsulation is a ‘cure-all’ to prevent postpartum depression and lactation challenges. Life transitions are challenging and require more than a ‘happy pill’ to cure what ails you; community support and love, as well as patience and endurance are the lubrication that makes a way for a strong bond within yourself and with the new life you made. Packages Essentials Package: $350 Includes pickup of placenta within 24 hours of birth, encapsulation, umbilical cord keepsake, and delivery back to you within 72 hours* Everything Package: $450 Includes pickup of placenta within 24 hours of birth, all services (encapsulation, umbilical cord keepsake, placenta print, tincture, and salve) and delivery back to you within 72 hours. *Additional services of your choice can be added to the Essentials Package for $35 each **Pickup/ Delivery Outside of Birmingham: additional $60 (may be reduced if there is an option to meet at a halfway point)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blessingway - Blessingway Ceremonies</image:title>
<image:caption>A Blessingway, or Birthingway, is a celebration, a moment of respect, a time when the birth-giver and their supporting community come together to honor birth as a rite of passage. It is a sacred, person-centered time intended to admire, revere, and affirm the birth-giver in preparation for the dance of birth. Cultures across time and spanning the globe hold space for important moments of transition and share common themes such as communal acknowledgement and preparation for the journey ahead; it is sanctified time to share wisdom and light with the person[s] in transition. Facilitation and movement of ceremony is our role within a Blessingway; it is not dissimilar to our roles as doulas. Our commitment is to hold space for the intimate to unfold in a smooth, organic, and undistracted way. We will work with organizing persons who know the birth-giver in order to personalize the blessed occasion. In the spirit of community, we are honored to partner with several Birmingham-based practitioners of health, healing, and the arts. Ideas for Blessingways include but are never limited to: Belly Casting, Yoga/Meditation, Group Singing, Circle Blessing with Yarn, Beaded Birthing Necklaces, Lighting Candles, Intoning with Singing Bowls, Prayers and Words of Affirmation, Laying- on of Hands, Foot bathing, Food & Libations, Henna, Dance-for-Birth, Flower Crowning, and Offerings for the New Life. Fee for Blessingway services is $200. Please inquire for more information.</image:caption>

<image:title>e-portfolio - Allison Miller, MPH</image:title>
<image:caption>Goals Coursework Outside the Classroom CV Allison Miller is a birth and postpartum doula, a childbirth educator, a midwife’s assistant, and a student midwife in Birmingham, Alabama. In 2019 she became a birth assistant for local midwife and in January 2021 began her career as a student midwife at Midwifery College of Utah. *photo by Bob Miller</image:caption>

<image:title>Sibling Doula - Sibling Doula</image:title>
<image:caption>Many families having a new baby are without trusted family members living locally or even a babysitter who is willing to be “on call” for an extended time while you have your new baby. Our sibling doulas are available to provide expert care and emotional reassurance for your older children during birth. When the time comes, you’ll have qualified and competent on-call care for your child(ren) during your labor and birth. As time allows, your sibling doula will provide household organization support such as meal preparation, tidying, laundry, and general assistance. You’ll have peace of mind so that you are better able to focus on the important work of giving birth. Whether planning for a home, birth center, or hospital birth, it is much easier for everyone to meet the needs of your older children with one person being solely responsible for them. One of our sibling doulas will come to your home to care for your older children where they are most comfortable. Starting rate: $650 (half of this fee is due at time of sign up) A two-hour “get-to-know-you visit” prior to the birth when she spends time with your child(ren) so as to become a familiar face. Parents can stay home for this visit or take this time to get some last-minute errands completed. On-call availability starting at 38 weeks. Up to 12 hours of continuous care on The Big Day. Any additional hours are billed at the discounted postpartum doula rate of $35 per hour. Your doula will provide up to 12 hours of continuous sibling support while you are in labor and in the early hours postpartum. If you need support beyond 12 hours, additional hours of support will be charged at the hourly rate of $35/hour. After 12 hours, your doula may rely on back-up support to continue to provide coverage. At no time will your child(ren) be left unattended. **Please note** If you have more than 2 children that will need in-home care the base rate as well as hourly rate does increase.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pregnancy Circle - Held - A Pregnancy Circle</image:title>
<image:caption>Pregnancy is a loaded word. The ways in which we find ourselves experiencing the months between conception and birth may or may not exceed our expectations. But truly the journey to become pregnant or the shock of a surprise pregnancy is all just as much a part of our current reality. None of this was meant to be lived outside of community. Held - A Pregnancy Circle is a THREE week closed group for pregnant moms in Birmingham. Come rest in connection and solidarity with other pregnant mothers who are bringing their whole selves to each gathering. Throughout the course of the Circle we will hold space for what is most present for you while holding lightly to carefully crafted topics to guide our time together such as: Changing Bodies Changing Relationships Connection to your Baby Recognition of who you want to be as a Mother Birth There is beauty and joy in walking through pregnancy together. The deep connection built by showing up consistently for yourself and others throughout the course of this circle will benefit you and your baby as these relationships continue to blossom as you all enter motherhood. The circle is open to all pregnant mothers regardless of whether this is your first, second, third (+) pregnancy. The next circle is: Friday, April 3, 10, 17 (6-8pm) Location - Iron City OT (135 Gemini Circle, Suite 201, Birmingham, AL 35209 Fee: $125 ($100 for current BHM Born clients) Inquire below for more information.</image:caption>
